My TV show idea

My idea is to create a tv show about 5 boys who live with their mum in a farm house in America. One of the boys gets abducted and nobody knows what or who has taken him.

The genre of my tv show will be drama and Horror.
Market research:  A popular tv show in the same genre is Happy Valley, which is a British crime drama created by Sally Waintwright running time per show is 60 minutes and it also networked on BBC one and BBC one HD but Netflix have also purchased it be streamed on their services. In the first series the 6 episodes got an average of 8.21 million UK viewers. In the second series it hit 9.37 million Uk views. Happy Valley airs at 9pm. Happy Valley is a tv show evolving around Sgt Cathrinw Cawood and is located in western Yorkshire. Happy Valley follows the Sargent on her daily crime fighting tasks around Calder Valley  The other Two programs I researched are not on Barb.co.uk.

The other program I researched was stranger things which is an American series. Written and directed by Matt and Ross Duffer . The story is about a boy who disappears and his friends, police and mother try to find him. A telekinetic friends helps the friend in their search. The show is set in 1980s in a made up town called Hawkins the whole tv programme has a 1980's pop culture which adds aesthetically. This show is a Netflix original show released this year its already made highly positive reviews and a second series is in the making. The running time is about 42-55 minutes. Not only did it get 95% on rotten tomatoes it also gained 9/10 on IMDB and 9.1/10 from TV.com. Within the first 16 days of streaming it hit 8.2 million viewers. This Show is a Netflix original so it only airs on Netflix.  This TV program is not on Barb.co.uk

Another Popular show in the drama genre is Breaking Bad is another crime drama which is about a true story of Walter White who was a chemistry teacher that was diagnosed with lung cancer. So him and a former student Jesse Pinkman both turn to a life of crime by making and selling meth. Walter made the best meth so the buyers kept buying from him. Walter keeps making the meth to secure his families financial future before he dies. Breaking Bad was filmed in Albuquerque in New Mexico. Breaking Bad had originally aired on AMC for five seasons running from January 2008 to September 2013. It is widely saif to be on of the best television series of all time, when the series finale aired it the series was one of the most watched cable shows. A whopping 10.3 million people tuned in for the series finale. This TV program is not on Barb.co.uk

The audience for my Tv show will be both male and female. They will be roughly be aged between 16-40. My Tv series will be aimed at people who already watch Dramas shows and films such as : Taken, Gone baby gone, Kidnap, and Flash which is a freak tv show about a super hero that can move really fast this will relate to my Tv show because its abnormal.  Also my show will be aimed at people who love suspense, who love not knowing whats happening until the very end. A lot of consumers of my program will use Facebook as well as Instagram and Twitter. I could use these social networking platforms to advertise my production. Audience member will also like American Horror Story which has a freaky touch to it. So they will like mine because it is the same. I would say big target audience of my TV show will be similar to me, so the audience would have hobbies such as, skateboarding, gaming, surfing, playing the guitar and possibly the gym. The audience could also be in education either college or university. The audience will typically play games like, Far cry which is a first person shooter series which puts players in exotic environments with a huge map to travel on there is lots of exploring to do which links to my TV show, and the elder scrolls which are exploring games with multiple paths to choose the series of games has sold more than 40 million copies. The series is known for its detailed view on open worlds and it free form gameplay which means players can explore the fantasy world instead of sticking to missions. This relates to my TV show as its big and can be explored.

Production Research

In my Show I will need Actors who will be featured to tell my story on the TV show. I would like to keep my actor list little as possible so that the veiwers of the show can get attached and feel the same emotions to all of the actors, ie if one of the character becomes sad I want to viewer to feel the same pain. At the moment I am thinking 3 main characters and 8 side character although this could change as the TV show progresses. Good actors will show their emotions and put themselves in a somebody's feet acting as them. A big time actor is Brad Pitt who is the star on films such as: Fury, World War Z, and Mr and Mr's Smith.

I will need script writers these are the people who will work with the creator and director to create the dialogue and story line for the show for the character to follow whilst on set. This is one of the major parts of the production. The better the script the better the better the show will be which means more viewers and more money.  Usually screen writers start their careers writing on spec (writing without being hired or paid) Most professional screen writers will have a talent agency working for them to get them screen writing jobs to do. Armature writers will less likely get paid were as professional writers will. A big time Screen writer is Jon Lucas who was a writer and producer for the Hangover trilogy.

Set Designer and location scouter a set designer is someone who makes sets which is where most of the production takes place. Location scouter go out and find locations to use for the TV show. Both of these will be needed to create beautiful scees. I want this TV show to stand out from all the other TV dramas I want the Scenery to stand out. It is very important that this TV show uses sets that are abnormal and spooky to fit the mise on scene and the aesthetics of the TV show. It is important to have these roles so that it can get done quicker. Most set designers and location scouters work freelance so they can chose their pay and when they want to work. The more known you are for these roles the more money and work you will get. One big set designer is Stephenie Mcmillan who worked on the sets for Harry Potter. My TV show will be bother in studio and locational I think it will be easier to film most of the show inside a studio but having awesome locations is a must for the scenery.

A Director  is something every TV show needs that main man who has control over everything that is happening someone who takes charge of the whole production. The director is the one that keeps all the crew members in order and remind them what to focus on whilst filming. The core to the TV show without the director there will be no show. Scripts should always be given to the director.  I would like to be the director of the show that I created to make sure than it is done properly to the standard that I want it. If a TV show/film is being produced after a book it is important that the director sticks to the story line of the book as much as he can. A really good Director I like is Martin Scorsese who is responsible for directing The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) and Goodfellas (1990)

Camera and sound operators  Camera men are needed to film the production. All the camera men on my production have to be highly talented. They have to use the right angles and frames in order to keep the aesthetics in the show. Sound operators are needed to make sure that the voiceovers are on point. Camera operators mainly work free lance they can be hired on dvcamhire.co.uk working as freelance they can chose their own pay and when they work. The more known and more experienced camera and sound operators will charge the most money for their services. However some camera and sound operators will be contracted to work on sets and will get a salary wage instead of a freelance wage. There are no famous camera or sound operators as it is a basic job.

Video and sound editors After all the production has been done its time for the post pre-production this the part where the film comes alive with special effects which is were extraordinary parts of the film is made on the computer and can not be made in real life, cut out of the film footage which is for party of the footage that are not needed in the film, effects of the film for example the filter (the colour of the footage) . The sound editors are the ones who then add soundtracks to the TV show the also put on sound effects such as car crash noises, horses riding the best way to do that is to hit two half's of coconuts together. Sound editor jobs are the easiest to get as less people do the job. It is important that the TV show has top quality sound effects because this will help the realism of the show.  The editors play a big part of the atmosphere of the show because they can change the toning of the film. Also the sound editors can change the atmosphere with the music they put in.

Producers
Film producers have a variety of roles they can either be employed by a production company or work independently to coordinate and make aspects of a TV production, this can be selecting scripts coordinating writing, editing or directing and also takes control of the finances for the show. The producer also has to find the screen writer for the show unless the show is based of a book. There are multiple ways of becoming a producer some film schools offer the degree that does include TV and film production knowledge some people have started as editor and writer then turn into producers other producers have come from being directors and actors.

Equipment

For TV shows that have low budgets equipment can be hired from hireacamera.com you can hire : Lighting from £48 per day, cameras from £72 to £260 per day, tripods and grips from £11 per day, camera lenses from £10 per day, monitors from £12 per day, boom microphones from £9 per day
this website is great for hiring out sound and video recording equipment. Although if a TV show has a big budget it can splash out the money to buy its own equipment to produce the TV which is better because you wouldn't have to worry about giving the equipment back and once you've got it its yours.
I will need cameras to film the actors on set and in Location I will need microphones to record the sound and dialogue from the characters. Cameras already come with audio capturing capabilities but the quality of audio recorded is not that good so I will need external boom and rod microphones to capture the audio. I will need lighting, most of the filming will be done in the dark exterior and interior so lighting is a essential as it is important to see the characters and other things. I will need tripods to keep the camera still whilst its in pursuit of filming the show. If the camera was shaky the footage would be blurry also it makes the footage look better when the camera is still. I will need computer with editing software to edit the footage and sound footage.

Synopisis episode on: Five brothers are playing hide and seek in a forest around their house one of them who is on finds three of the brothers but cannot find the fourth hider. Eventually the four brothers all end up looking for their brother getting more and more scared as time goes on. After three hours of looking the go running to their mum who is at home. They tell her and at first she thinks they're just being silly and thinks he is just still hiding. She goes out to look for him anyway. After 30 minutes she stats getting concerned and worried after an hour passes she rings the police crying knowing that her son is lost or has been abducted. The cops arrive to the forest of which the kid has been lost. After the mother tells the Sargent what has happened he calls a search party. Everyone in the town including the 4 other brothers go out looking for the 9 year old boy. Everyone is shocked because they live in a nice neighbourhood were nothing like this happens.

Episode two; The mother starts getting depressed knowing that the possibility of her son living is slim and it is dropping. 3 days after searching the police call it quits but the brothers still think he is out there. Meanwhile their dad comes to see them. They've never seen their dad ever before.  He was a deadbeat a nobody that didn't do anything for them. There mum hated him being there but he insisted that he wanted to help look for his son. The boys didn't pay interest to their father.

Episode three: The Sargent finds clothes in the forest he runs them back to the mum and asks if they were her boys. And they are this opens a world of possibilities for the watcher. The kid could be still alive so the search is called back on.

The same report just spell checked and proof read.

The audience could also be in education either college or university. The audience will typically play games like, farcry, and the elder scrolls which are exploring games. With multiple paths to choose.   Production Research    In my Show I will need Actors who will be featured to tell my story on the TV show. I would like to keep my actor list little as possible so that the viewer's of the show can get attached and feel the same emotions to all of the actors, i.e. if one of the character becomes sad I want to viewer to feel the same pain. At the moment I am thinking 3 main characters and 8 side character although this could change as the TV show progresses.     I will need script writers these are the people who will work with the creator and director to create the dialogue for the show for the character to follow whilst on set.  Set Designer and location scouter a set designer is someone who makes sets which is where most of the production takes place. Location scouter go out and find locations to use for the TV show. Both of these will be needed to create beautiful scenes. I want this TV show to stand out from all the other TV dramas I want the Scenery to stand out. It is very important that this TV show uses sets that are abnormal and spooky to fit the mise En scene and the aesthetics of the TV show. Camera and sound operators  Camera men are needed to film the production. All the camera men on my production have to be highly talented. They have to use the right angles and frames in order to keep the aesthetics in the show. Sound operators are needed to make sure that the voiceovers are on point.  Video and sound editors After all the production has been done its time for the post pre-production this the part where the film comes alive with special effects, cuts, effects. The sound editors are the ones who then add soundtracks to the TV show the also put on sound effects. It is important that the TV show has top quality sound effects because this will help the realism of the show.  The editors play a big part of the atmosphere of the show because they can change the toning of the film. Also the sound editors can change the atmosphere with the music they put in.

Understanding the tv and film industry

13/10/16
devolpment, pre production, production, post production, and distribution

Development is the first thing to to do in the film/tv industry. This stage is essentially where the core of the show or film takes its shape.  After developing the story a lot of screen writers the step afterwards is to write the scene by scene for the whole movie. A lot of writers will use index cards for every single scene. This makes it easier to rearrange. The step after this is to write the screen play. As soon as you have a strong image of the story structure then you should start writing the screenplay. The next step is probably the most painful for any film maker especially independent film makers.  This is financing the movie. There are different ways of making a budget for a film is. 'The studio model" The strategy is to make a few films of the same genre, and then approach investors with the films. With this what you are trying to do is proving that you carry alot of creativity and can make the buyers money. Another way for funding a film to is to get government funding. Every year tens of millionsg et pumped into the film industry in Britain. The public money is currently coming from the BFI.
BFI finances budget to filmmakers. You can apply for the budget and wait for the outcome.
Another new way of budgeting a film is crowdfunding. Before 2011 crowdfunding wasn't really a big thing until campaigns on kickstater would raise over $100,000. The strategy is to produce a pitch on the kickstarter website and hope people find a interest in your production. The better you pitch you idea the more chance you have of getting invested.

Now that you have finished the development its time to pre produce. This is the stage where you should plan and make designs to prepare for the production of the movie. Making up a schedule for the filming will come in handy when producing the film. Story boards should be getting sketched up. Everthing that you need in to movie like costumes, set, locations, props, music and sound. At this stage the the cast and crew are also recruited. This included location manager, production manager, the casting director, the director of photography, the sound designer, art director, composer, the actors, the choregrapher and the Director.   Storyboards are good for filmmaking because you can create it shot by shot. The more information you add the better. You don't nee d to be an artist to create a storyboard but each drawing should be readable. The main part of pre production is to time a shooting order. Doing this will save a lot of time this includes; location, weather, the time of day that you want to film and other things you want to add, little or small. Organising loctions will save you a lot of time because you wont have to go back and forth to different scenes.

Your film is going to need music. Pre production is a really good start to looking for music for you film. Having your own original soundtrack is gonna make your movie stand out from the other
s. You can find musician's either locally or on websites.
Creating posters for your film will make suspense for your film, it will also advertise your film before its even out.

The next step in filmmaking is production before this you should double check that all you preproduction is all set up. Firstly make a checklist of all the things you need. Always look after your actors, be very organised have chairs, snacks on set a long day of filming can be for tiring. Roughly a full days work of filming will only create about 3 minutes of footage used in the film. When you are shooting a scene you should start with the most difficult shot then work your way down to the easier shots. Having a photographer on set to get some behind the sceens shots. the more people you have making the film the better the produce will be which means more people will watch it which = £££.
Get one of the crew member to take a few snaps on their phone of the shoot. If you can share that quick photo up on facebook the more people will see what you're getting up to. When you're in production you should always be checking up on your budget the last thing you want to do is be in the middle of making a movie and run out of money.  Always expect the unexpected you could be filming at a location that's prohibited. Then you can get kicked off the location for security. Always have backups for locations, actors ect. Also whilst filming you should never delete a shot even if you think it was a miss recording.

Now you have filmed your video the next part is post production. You should start this by reviewing all your footage, making sure you got every shot exactly the way you wanted and needed. After you review them you are ready to save them into files, make sure each shot is numbered in order. And do not delete any of the footage even if you think its an accidental recording. You should check over the footage with someone else having that other person can help pick out mistakes ect. Marking files could come in handy, for example if you have a good shot highlight that file green, if you have a okay shot highlight that yellow, if you have a bad/unusable shot highlight that file red. You should either use final cut pro or Adobe Premiere to edit your film. there are complex editing software's.  Now its time for the editing, first of all you should edit your clips in high definition, these files will take up more memory but it will boost the quality of your video and it will make it look professional
add the music to your video make sure it all fits aesthically perfect, add the intro possibly the film title and then add the credits the credits should consist of actors, and everyone who was in help of making the film everyone to the director to the costume and prop designers. Having a original intro will be very cool. After the sound mixing is all up to perfect standards the next step is to finish off your editing making sure it is everything you wanted make sure nothing is forgotten and you're happy with your end product that you have worked very hard on.

The final step is to release and promotion after all that hard work is exported, you can finally finish you're marketing materials. You can make a start by advertising your video, you can be clever about this, for example if your video is a horror you can advertise your video at a rock festival.  You can also make some high resolution screen shots that have come from the film with a short synopsis of the film. Create a premiere event, having this will make a big hype for your film. Also throwing a premiere is a really good way to thank you to your cast and crew for the hard work they put into the film. Another good way to promote is to get yourself to a film festival where you can show your film to other film makers.

Tv licence. BBC is a British Broadcasting Company that produced radio, film, news and websites for the public. BBC is a public company which is FUNDED by license fees which is paid annauly by everyone who has a tv which is most of the UK public. The licensee fee is £145.50 although you can pay for a black and white tv license for £49.00 All of the funding comes from the government. Anybody over the age of 75 can get their tv licence reduced so they don't have to pay for any of it, this does not come automatically, you have to apply for it.
If you dont pay for for a tv licence and you watch tv you are actually breaking the law this also goes to you watching tv programes, downloading or recording programes on a laptop, mobile, tablet, games console and dvds. If you are caught out you will be fined maximally £1,000. The maximum fine in Guernsey is £2,000 and in Jersey its £500. If you want to watch tv shows that are live then you need a tv licence, to watch BBC iplayer or on demand you will also need a tv licence. You will not need a tv licence to watch netflix, youtube or amazon instant video. You can also watch the itv hub or any other non BBC services. The fee that you pay gives you a range of radio, tv and online content. Some of the fee money goes into broadband in the UK which funds the TV channel s4c .

Comercial ownership companies in media which is privetly owned. The funding for comericial ownership comes from advertising. Adverts will run inbetween radio stations and television to promote products. Other companies will pay the radio or telivstion services to promotre their products.  Comercial Broadcasting clashes with other paid services like radio, satalite and cable television.

Private ownership is a media company ownership that has nothing to do with the government this means that the money that you use to produce the film is coming out of your own wallet. Having a private company can be stressful at times private companies find it harder to raise money to produce simply because nobody can buy into their share holds. Public companies have to announce their financial statements were private companies don't. The main bad point of self funding is that you have to take caution of how you are spending your money as it you own money you're spending.

Subscription fees are when a company or business sells its product to the public to have access to it. Originally subscribing was made for magazines or newspapers. But now its used for music with: Spotify, Tiadal and apple music. Which charges for public to listen and download music with their apps. Tv and Film networks also use subscription's. Companies like Netflix, Amazon Prime and now TV. Games also use subscribing were people pay to play the game servers. Subscribing Funds is a good way for companies to earn money to make better products.

Advertising for funds.    Other companies promote their products on tv shows when the adverts come up halfway through the show. This money goes to the network company. Although adverts can be done though magazines eg promoting clothes, perfume ect. Radio, blogs and websites.  Websites such as YouTube sometimes have 5 second advertisement's that they make you watch before you can actually watch the video you wanted to watch. YouTube also have advertisements on the side of the webpage same with blogs. Most popular magazines charge fortunes to place advertisements in their magazines. Radio broadcasters can make money from businesses that want to promote their company across the radio example the radio presenter can advertise for a business.

Media conglomerate is one large media company which buys a number of different smaller companies. For example Disney who now own Marvel, Star Wars, ESPN, Pixar animation, Hollywood Pictures, Touchstone pictures, ABC entertainment, ABC digital, ABC family, ABC times square studio,  and they even own their own theme parks. bringing in a revenue $52.46 billion(2015) Disney has a massive play in the TV and film industry. Publishing products such as cable television, publishing, films, music, video games, theme parks, radio and web portals. Disney was founded in 1923 on the 16th of October in Burbank, California. Disney first opened their Paris theme park on April 12th 1992 and even opened Disney world resort in 1971 October 1st. Also a Disney cruise was made 21 years ago. Disney was founded by Walt Disney with just him and a few workers making sketches now the company has over 180,000 employees. Disney is a public mass media company that dominated the media, they made $936,662,225 from the box office of Star wars: The Force Awakens.

Conglomerate media companies involve mass media enterprises examples like television, radio, publishing, motion pictures and even theme parks. A lot of critism has been called out to the larger conglomerates who are currently dominating media by ''taking all the other companies out of business'' and using ''unfair practices''.The benefits of media conglomerate is that the main company earns more money than it used to simply because of the sales from the company that it has bought, also the small company will gain money from the big company and will less likely go bust if there an even bigger company as a parent.
Although media conglomerate's have benefit's there are also some downfalls such as, decreasing competition for all the other media companies out there. With conglomerate media companies all the money will go to the same big companies it wont be distributed evenly.

Comcast is another example of a large conglomerate company who owns other company, Comcast is the largest conglomerate in terms of revenue.  In 2014 Comcast reported to have a $69 billion in revenue. Comcast is a big producer of feature films and television shows which are consumed over the air and cable television broadcasts.  Comcast own NBC and telemundo, CNBC, NBCSN, E!, The Weather Chanel and Universal Pictures. Universal Pictures have resorts in Los Angeles and Orlando. They also have resorts in Japan and Singapore.  Comcast is family owned by the Roberts family using multiple generations serving as company executives.
